Conventions & Industry Events
NYSMWA hosts a variety of events throughout the year that are designed to benefit our members. Attend a free
educational seminar for movers or learn from guest speakers at a trade show. Our Annual State Convention welcomes
members and vendors from all over New York for a weekend of business sessions, networking, and recreational activities.
State Engagement
Our members are able to maintain a high profile with the NYS Dept. of Transportation. NYSDOT staff are regular attendees
and guest speakers at our regional meetings and Annual State Convention.
- We effected the creation of the “Warehouseman’s Lien Law,” which is superior to most other liens and helps to ensure
that warehouseman’s rights are protected. - We proposed the non-CDL pilot program to the NYS Dept. of Transportation, which allows non-CDL drivers to operate
vehicles with a GVW up to 25,999 lbs. NYSMWA worked with them to coordinate elements of the program, which is still
in effect today. - We worked to develop guidelines for movers that define taxable services, in cooperation with the NYS Dept. of Taxation and Finance. This is why moving is not taxed in NYS.
NYSMWA Fall Conference

Our event kicks off on October 21st with a cocktail reception, team building and networking opportunities! The conference will
conclude with our Banquets & Awards Dinner on the evening of October 22nd.
Membership Types
New Active Member – $275 (First Year)
As a new active member, your first year’s dues are half the regular membership dues. Upon your second year, this will be adjusted
to full active member dues.
Active Member – $500
Individuals, partnerships, corporations or other legal entities of good business reputation, engaged in household goods moving
and/or storage within NYS.
Associate Member – $500
Firms or individuals in allied industries such as: forwarding companies, material manufactures, vendors, van line companies,
tariff bureaus, moving and storage associations, out-of-state moving and storage companies, and other persons/firms not directly
involved in the moving and storage of household goods.
Sustaining Member – $300
Storage and trucking firms not associated with the household goods moving and storage industry. Includes the same rights and
benefits as Active Membership.
Company Branch Member – $300
Branch of a member firm whose ownership is the same. Does not include voting rights. Benefits are limited to receiving mailings
and other membership materials, including discounts where applicable.
Becoming Licensed
We understand that obtaining a certificate to transport household goods in New York State can be a large undertaking.
NYSMWA can walk you through this process, step by step. From initial start-up costs to filing a tariff, NYSMWA has
programs that can help you.
- As a member of NYSMWA, you will be eligible to join Safety Group #251 and save up to 62.5% on your worker’s
compensation insurance costs. - NYSMWA partners with industry suppliers, such as insurance carriers to give you more options and competitive pricing
when it comes to purchasing cargo insurance. - We can fulfill the state’s tariff requirements by writing and filing a tariff on your behalf.
- NYSMWA hosts annual and regional events to offer you opportunities to network with peers, meet with industry suppliers
and stay up to date on important news and information that can help your business succeed.
How Do I Join?
Any licensed moving and storage company registered to operate within New York State is eligible to join NYSMWA.
Membership applications are reviewed by NYSMWA’s Board of Directors. We will contact the NYSDOT and federal DOT to verify your business
name, license, and general compliance with regulations.
Applicants who have been approved by a majority of the Board will become full members upon first payment of their annual dues.
